Background blur separates a subject from clutter and is the single most recognizable "professional photo" signal. There are two ways to get it, and they fail differently.
Optical Blur: What the Lens Does
Real background blur comes from a shallow depth of field, and depends on three things:
- Wide aperture (small f-number like f/1.8): more blur.
- Long focal length (85 mm rather than 24 mm): more blur.
- Distance ratio: subject close to you, background far away. This is the free one — just moving your subject a few metres away from the wall does more than any setting.
Optical blur is *continuous*: things slightly behind the subject are slightly soft, things far behind are very soft. Highlights become smooth round discs. Nothing has a hard boundary.
Software Blur: What Portrait Mode Does
The phone estimates a depth map, decides which pixels are "subject" and applies a blur to the rest. It's remarkably good — until the depth estimate is wrong. The classic failures:
- Hair, glasses and fur — thin or semi-transparent details get assigned to the wrong layer, so strands get blurred away or a halo of sharp background survives around the head.
- Objects at the same distance as the subject — a hand held forward, a coffee cup on the table, get blurred despite being in the same plane.
- A single flat blur amount — everything behind the subject is equally soft, which is why it can look like a cardboard cutout on a blurred wallpaper.
- Fake highlight shapes — synthetic bokeh discs applied uniformly, rather than growing with distance.
Getting the Best of Both
- Create real separation first: move the subject away from the background, and step back and zoom in rather than shooting up close and wide.
- Use software blur as an enhancement, not the whole effect. A modest amount on an already-separated shot looks far better than heavy blur trying to rescue a cluttered background.
- Check the edges at 100% before publishing — that's where the depth map errors live.
- For product photos, consider not blurring at all. Buyers want to see detail, and marketplaces often prefer clean, evenly-lit, fully sharp images on plain backgrounds.
When a Plain Background Beats Blur
If the goal is simply to hide a messy room, replacing the background with a clean color is often more convincing than blurring it — a blurred mess is still recognizably a mess, while a clean backdrop reads as intentional. For headshots and product shots, that swap is usually the better call.
